Novak Djokovic accused of ‘sick obsession’ by Nick Kyrgios: ‘Can’t stand him!’

Journalist accuses Novak Djokovic of lying

NICK KYRGIOS accused Novak Djokovic of having a “sick obsession with wanting to be liked” in a throwback interview, a trait which ironically means the Australian “can’t stand him”.

Earlier this month, Djokovic was deported from Australia on public interest grounds a day before the start of the Australian Open because he is unvaccinated against coronavirus.

The world No 1, who has won the last three Australian Opens, had initially been granted a controversial vaccine exemption to take part in the tournament, but the tennis star was held by border force officials upon arriving into the country.

After Djokovic was made to return to his native Serbia on the eve of the tournament, Kyrgios shocked the tennis world by speaking out in defence of the star.

“As a human, that’s a dangerous place to be in ‒ when you feel like the world is against you, like you can’t do anything right.”

Kyrgios also revealed that Djokovic had personally thanked him as the Australian described the situation as a “s***show” and blasted his country’s immagration minister Alex Hawke over his handling of the situation.

The 26-year-old, who was knocked out in the Australian Open second round by Daniil Medvedev, surprised a number of people with his show of support for the tennis icon.

The pair have long had a tense relationship, with Kyrgios having previously claimed Djokovic was not on the same level of greatness as rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

The Canberra-born tennis player also said Djokovic was “cringe-worthy” with a “sick obsession with wanting to be liked”.

Speaking on the No Challenges Remaining podcast in 2019, Kyrgios said: “I just feel like he has a sick obsession with wanting to be liked.

“He just wants to be like Roger. For me personally, I don’t care right now, I’ve come this far.
